Local Picks - Things To Do in Beijing

Every recommendation here comes from our Beijing Local Expert team. These aren’t automated lists or paid placements. We live in Beijing, walk these streets, and know what’s worth your time.

Our picks cover a range of experiences, from wandering through old hutongs in Dongcheng to grabbing street food in Chaoyang on a cool spring night. We update regularly because Beijing changes fast, and what works one season might not the next. You’ll also find practical tips you won’t get in guidebooks, like how to time a visit to the Temple of Heaven for fewer crowds or the best way to enjoy a lazy afternoon in 798 Art District.

Try to visit early mornings or late afternoons at parks and gardens. Locals do that to avoid the heat or smog. This is the kind of advice our Beijing Local Expert team shares, cut through the noise and come away with a real feel for the city.

Local advice from Beijing

If you’re planning to explore Beijing’s hutongs, try to go on a weekday morning or early afternoon. Weekends get crowded as locals and tourists both visit, especially around Nanluoguxiang. Take your time walking through the narrow alleys in Dongcheng or even better, head to less-visited hutongs around Gulou. You’ll catch everyday life, neighbors chatting, kids playing, and small shops that don’t cater only to tourists. Also, bring cash for small buys and be ready to stroll without a fixed plan. Sometimes the best finds come when you wander without rushing.
