Description
Explore the Yonghe Temple, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Beijing. Discover the temple’s rich history, from its origins as a residence for Ming court eunuchs to its transformation into a state-run monastery in 1744.
Admire the temple’s architecture, which blends Han-style imperial design with Tibetan Buddhist elements. See the five-tiered roof skylights of the Falun Hall, representing Mount Sumeru, and the gilded lamasery pagodas.
Visit the Yonghe Gate Hall, the main entrance hall, flanked by bronze lions. Inside, see the Maitreya Buddha statue and the Four Heavenly Kings. Continue to the Main Yonghe Hall, the former throne hall of Prince Yong, now housing the three bronze Buddhas of the Past, Present, and Future.
Explore the Yongyou Hall, once Yongzheng’s bedroom and later a place for imperial coffins. It now enshrines Amitayus Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, and Simhanada Buddha, reflecting the transition from palace to temple.
Visit the Falun Hall, the core scripture-chanting hall, with a unique Tibetan-style roof and a grand statue of Tsongkhapa. See the Wanfu Pavilion, the tallest building in the temple, housing an 18-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha statue carved from a single giant sandalwood log.
