Temple of Heaven Location: Dongcheng District, south of the city center Built: 1420 (Ming Dynasty) UNESCO World Heritage Site: 1998 Highlights Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests: The iconic triple-eave circular hall with blue glazed tiles, supported by 28 pillars symbolizing seasons, months, and constellations. Circular Mound Altar: A three-tiered white marble altar where emperors worshipped Heaven on the Winter Solstice. Imperial Vault of Heaven & Echo Wall: A circular building housing divine tablets, surrounded by a wall that creates amazing acoustic effects. Key Facts: The largest and best-preserved imperial sacrificial complex in the world, embodying the ancient Chinese philosophy of 'round heaven and square earth'. Yonghe Temple (Lama Temple) Location: Dongcheng District, near the Northeast 2nd Ring Road Built: 1694 (originally a prince’s residence) Converted to Monastery: 1744 (Qing Dynasty) Highlights Architectural Fusion: A unique blend of Han, Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan styles. Main Halls: Five grand halls along a central axis, including the Hall of Harmony and Peace, Hall of Everlasting Protection, and the Wanfu Pavilion. Giant Sandalwood Buddha: An 18-meter-tall statue carved from a single sandalwood tree, a world record.
