Description
Yangmeizhu Xiejie is a charming and historic slanted alley located in Xicheng District, Beijing. Stretching about 496 meters from Meishi Street to Yanshou Street, it has a history dating back to the Yuan Dynasty and has long been a center of culture and literature.
In the Ming and Qing dynasties, this street was famous for bookstores, publishing houses, and guild halls. Many famous scholars and writers, such as Shen Congwen, once lived or stayed here, making it a gathering place for intellectuals. Its unique diagonal layout is quite special among the regular hutongs of old Beijing.
Today, Yangmeizhu Xiejie perfectly combines traditional charm with modern creativity. While preserving ancient courtyard houses and gray‑brick architecture, it is also lined with elegant independent bookstores, cozy cafes, creative boutiques, and handicraft shops. Compared with busy tourist areas, it remains quiet and artistic, attracting many visitors who love slow travel and cultural exploration.
Walking along this lane, people can feel the authentic atmosphere of old Beijing while enjoying the freshness of contemporary art and design. It is truly one of the most beautiful and culturally rich hutongs in the city.
