Description

Skip Badaling's crowds and hike the real Great Wall — the way it was built to be experienced. This full-day trip takes you along Jiankou, the Great Wall's most dramatic and unrestored section, then across the ridgeline to Mutianyu, one of the best-preserved and most scenic restored sections near Beijing. Jiankou (literally 'Arrow Nock') is built of white dolomite stone, so it stands out from every other section of the Wall. It was never restored, so you'll walk along crumbling watchtowers, steep unguarded ridgelines and wild vegetation exactly as centuries of weather have left them — a completely different experience from the paved, railed sections most visitors see. Your private guide knows this route well and will set a pace that matches your fitness level and the day's conditions. After 4-5 hours of hiking, the trail brings you down onto Mutianyu, where the Wall has been carefully restored. The change is dramatic — smooth stonework, watchtowers you can climb, and sweeping views without the Jiankou drop-offs. From here, you can ride the toboggan down the mountainside, a fast and genuinely fun way to end the hike (a cable car option is also available). WHAT TO EXPECT ● Morning hotel pickup and a scenic 1.5-2 hour drive out of central Beijing ●A challenging but manageable hike: uneven stone steps, some steep sections, and no handrails on the Jiankou side — comfortable hiking shoes are essential ●A local lunch at a family-run restaurant that serves local residents, not tour buses — your guide will help you order and will eat with you ●Free time to explore Mutianyu and take the toboggan down before driving back to your hotel WHY THIS TOUR ●You see both faces of the Great Wall in a single day: wild and untouched, then restored and accessible ●It's a private tour — just you and your group, never combined with strangers ●No factory stops, no forced shopping, no commission-driven detours ●Your guide is experienced on this specific route and prioritizes your safety on the more exposed sections of Jiankou GOOD TO KNOW ●This is a moderate-to-strenuous hike, not suitable for young children, anyone with a fear of heights, or limited mobility ●Weather can affect trail conditions; your guide may adjust the route for safety ●Bring: sturdy closed-toe shoes, water, sun protection, and a light jacket even in summer (ridgelines can be windy)
