4.Brief introduction of the Temple of Heaven
The Temple of Heaven Park, originally known as the 'Altar of Heaven and Earth,' is located at No. 7 Tiantan Inner East Road, Dongcheng District, Beijing. It was first built in 1420 during the 18th year of Emperor Yongle's reign in the Ming Dynasty. In 1530, the 9th year of Emperor Jiajing's reign, it was renamed 'Temple of Heaven.' It served as the venue where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties conducted ceremonies to worship heaven and pray for good harvests. Covering an area of 273 hectares, it is the largest existing ancient sacrificial architecture complex in China. The park is encircled by two altar walls and divided into the 'Inner Altar' and the 'Outer Altar.' The northern part is circular, and the southern part is square, symbolizing the ancient Chinese belief in a round heaven and square earth.
