Description

The Mutianyu Great Wall is the longest and best fully-restored Great Wall section open to tourists. You can see a rare triangular formation of three interlinked watchtowers at Mutianyu. The Great Wall at Mutianyu is less crowded and has more densely spaced watchtowers than at Badaling. Mutianyu is the favorite section for exploring with (young) kids, with good and safe access. Cable cars, chairlifts, and the toboggan are of your choice, making it more family-friendly and easy to visit. Touring the Great Wall could be said to be showing loyalty to Chairman Mao. Under the westernmost towers, on the side of a grassy ridge, is the 200-meter-long phrase 忠于毛主席 — 'loyalty to Chairman Mao' (zhōng yú Máo Zhǔxí /jong yoo maoww joo-sshee/). Chairman Mao once wrote: 'If you don't get to the Great Wall you're not a good man.' (不到长城非好汉). It's about 1.5 hours to 2 hours ride from the downtown area to the Mutianyu Wall. Once. you reach there you can choose either take the cable car up and down the wall to the watch tower 14 or take the chairlift up and toboggan down the wall to the watch tower 6. You can spend 2 hours or longer depending your physical conditions at the wall. Once you come down you can choose just go back or simply combine other scenic attractions in Beijing.
