Description
Explore the Confucian Temple and Guozijian, two of Beijing's most important historical sites. Begin at the Confucian Temple, founded in 1302 and completed in 1306. This sacred site was a place of royal worship for Confucius during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.
Enter through the Xianshi Gate, where you'll see 198 steles inscribed with the names of over 50,000 successful candidates from the imperial examinations. Visit the Dacheng Hall, the main sacrificial area, which houses statues of Confucius and his companions, as well as ancient ritual vessels and bells.
Next, head to the Guozijian, established in 1287 as the highest national institution and educational administrative center during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Walk through the Jixian Gate and Taixue Gate, and admire the glazed memorial archway titled 'Circular Bridge Education,' a landmark of the Imperial College.
Visit the Biyong Hall, a square hall surrounded by water, where Emperor Qianlong once gave a grand lecture. Explore the Yilun Hall, the former collection and lecture hall of the Imperial Academy, and see the original display showcasing the teaching scene of the highest ancient university.
End your visit at the Jingyi Pavilion, once used to store imperial books and provide training for supervisors. Discover the ruins of supervisor dormitories and sundials in the surrounding area.
